I just wanted to let you all know that this is an Excellent program. I can tell you first hand how wonderful Purple songs Can Fly is. My 10 year old daughter HATES to visit the Hematologist and she makes it very difficult to draw blood. She had her stuffed lion in tow along with her grandmother and me for her appointment. Before being called to give blood, Aaron Kaufman approached my daughter and asked her if she liked to write songs. She got very excited and started talking to him. As she was called for her appointment, Aaron followed her to the room and continued working with her on "her song." She even asked her grandmother and me to leave them alone. While writing the song, the nurse drew blood without even a movement or complaint by my daughter! Amazing! As the doctor arrived, Aaron excused himself but promised to help her finish her song. We learned that we would have to return to the doctor in three weeks. I was worried about what my daughter would say. Surprisingly, she said that she was excited to come back because she had to "finish her song". Aaron make an appointment with my daughter one hour before her actual return appointment. Needless to say, we had no complaints or problems getting to the next appointment since Purple songs Can Fly and Aaron Kaufman were planning to meet us too. They met, finished the song, recorded it, and gave my daughter CDs. I cannot say enough about this Project. I would have never thought something like this get my daughter to be willing to visit the hematologist and cooperate with bloodwork. Thank you Purple Songs Can Fly Project and thank you to Aaron Kaufman.

April 23, 2010

I have lost my grandmother to cancer and I almost lost my mother to cancer. I never really knew what went through the minds of people with a terrible disease such as cancer, and especially in kids so young. These songs on purple songs can fly really touched my heart and encouraged me to join the fight against cancer. I want to especially point out a special person and song. When I listened to Stephen's "I can make it" it brought me to tears. I go to school with him and though I never really talked to him, I used to see him around a lot and his voice could be heard throughout the school's halls and at the choir concerts. I never thought of him to be the face of an cancer survivor. And as a songwritter/poet myself his song really reached out to me as I hope it will many others. And I most definately look foward to embracing an wonderful friendship with him in the future. Purple Songs YOU GUYS ARE SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great idea. It would be terrific if this could be expanded to other pediatric hospitals across the country. I would surely donate to make that happen! (P.S. All I can say is WOW! What an inspiration you have brought to myself, but most of all to these children! I have never heard of "Purple Songs Can Fly" before. First I want to thank God for people like you. A friend in my church gave me an article from a Readers Digest about your mission. I play guitar and work with our youth and I had just done something similar where the 1st and 2nd graders gave me all the ideas they wanted in a song, which lead to "Touchdown Jesus!", their very own praise song. I just love what and What and who God places in my life, and am encouraged by acts like yours.
Keep on praising sister!,

Can you consider asking one of your talented techy-guys to construct some of the music on this page for YouTube:
http://www.purplesongscanfly.org/music.html

I would love to be able to share a YouTube link with all of my distance learning students and email subscribers about your efforts. I believe this would receive more "hits" than your mp3 files currently do. Your effort is certainly something that would attract a viral advertising effort through YouTube. Please, please, please consider doing this!

I learned of this from the Reader's Digest article.

Absolutely amazing idea! I was diagnosed with cancer just a few months before my 21st birthday. My 6 year old son was diagnosed with leukemia only days after he turned 2. He began six very long and difficult months of chemotherapy seven days after he was diagnosed. The one thing I did notice is he loved it when I sang to him, still does, but it truly seemed to soothe him. I really believe music warms the heart and calms the soul and I am proud to announce he is doing wonderful now and has his check-ups at the survivors clinic! I pray that one day there will be no person, child or adult, who will have to suffer from this horrible thief called cancer. You are giving these children a wonderful opportunity, the chance to heal and overcome. May God bless you all in everything you are doing because it's a wonderful thing!

This is a very worthy outreach. My mother died 10 years ago this Feb. 15th at age 92. She had a very loving heart & adored the color purple. If you have not heard about Children's Healthcre of Atlanta, they have a similar can & blood disorders wing. This is the link: http://www.choa.org/default.aspx?id=244
I do this b/c I believe you could get donations for your program by perhaps coming to Atlanta for a day to write somgs with the children here suffering from the same disorders here in Atlanta. WSB radio 750 would likely help with air time. I will pass along the information whenever I get the chance. This is a wonderful piece of our collective hearts. Thank you.

This is truly a wonderful idea. Having had cancer as an adult, I know how devastating it is. I can only imagine the impact this has on children. Your program has given children the opportunity to express creatively themselves and to "forget" what is a daily ordeal for a period of time.

February 20, 2009

I saw your story on the nightly news with Brian Williams 2/20/2009. It was very moving. My husband is a cancer survivor. I hope for the same especially for children. It's a terrible thing they must go through especially at those young ages.

Just saw the piece on NBC Nightly News. What an inspiration these children are to those of us who are supposed to be older and wiser. They are truly blessed with so many talents that might normally be hidden. The saying about when a door closes another one opens is so true.

I came across your website and just wanted to say how much I admire what you are doing to make the lives of children better. These kids face such intense and extreme difficulties and I'm sure the time you spend with them in creating a song gets their minds off of their illness. As a musician myself, I am very inspired by you to look into doing something similar in my area (Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey). Thanks and Happy New Year. Keep doing what you are doing and God Bless You.

What an awe inspiring, spirit building, memory making, jaw dropper of a project! Our only child, Jamie, died September 13th, 2007 of Rhabdomyosarcoma at our home, in our arms. He was treated at University of California San Francisco but we live in Nevada. We were gone from home for so long but he fought the battle with everything he had. He was used to fighting though, as he was born with Spina Bifida and spent the first 4 wks of his life at TCH in the Neo Natal unit. He was a constant patient there for 2 yrs, before we moved out west. He would have LOVED this project. I wish you could expand it to all the chilfen's hospitals. I know I am going to forward your website onto the Child Life people at UCSF, so they can learn about it. These songs are precious, in more ways than one. I wish I had one to hear my son's voice. Thank you for making them.

Hi.
What you guys are doing there is amazing. God must want to work in that place. I might go to states soon and i hope i get time to go and visit the hospital.
Continue what you're doing, and point to the kids that there is hope, and remember that the real hope is in our Lord Jesus.
I'll remember you all in my prayers. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Hi, Anita, I work at TCH as a nurse and I love the music the kids sing. If I could get a copy of one of the CD's, I might be able to get an Irish musical group to take it on
their spring tour. They had already left for the fall tour when I asked the first time. They did 50 cities in 70 days so the CD would do a lot of traveling. They are now back home in Ireland. I would be willing to buy a CD if they are available for purchase. Thanks.

What a brilliant idea. I wish Childrens Hospital in L.A. would allow such a thing. They don't have music facilities at all. I volunteer there playing music for the kids and frankly no one there has any vision or creativity. It is just a job to them. I have asked about similar projects for the kids there and they always say there is no money, which just isn't so. May God Bless you for what you are doing.

Not only am I an adult cancer survivor, but I am also a songwriter and singer. This project moves me to tears, but more than that, it makes me want to help others do something like this. You are an inspiration. We all know that cancer takes more than physical tolls upon us. Anything that helps to let go of the anxieties, express feelings, hopes, fears, is good. Thank you for this great effort and gift to people who need it. And, for those of us who are given the chance to listen.

March 20, 2007

I just checked out the site (had not looked at it in a while). I wanted to say thank you, Anita, for having the vision and the devotion to making Purple Songs Can Fly become such an awesome outlet for the children receiving care at Texas Children's Hospital. Music can evoke feelings and emotions, music can heal. Personally, I think that music makes the world go round. I know that Gracie enjoyed writing, singing, and recording. And in doing so, my husband and I have yet another piece of Gracie to cherish forever. There has been talk that Gracie would like to record another song. She says she wants to sing about food-the best time to record this one would be while Gracie is on the steroids! HaHa! Anyway, many thanks to you, Anita.

Thank you for being so patient and understanding with my son, Jonathan. Because of his autism, it is so hard for him to verbalize his feelings. He now goes around the house and constantly sings his song, "I hate shots."

He definitely is better prepared to battle his leukemia thanks to your generous gift of music and song. You both are definitely angels sent from above.

God bless you both,
Donna

Did things backward I suppose. Met Anita and Sonja and then my wife found this website.
My suspicions about you ladies were correct; Angels.

Very cool stuff, Anita.
I would love to be a guest helper sometime. I am a musician and a cancer survivor and alumni of MD Anderson myself and purple is my favorite color. I'm going to send a CD along to you. Very nice work here.
love,
Janet Z.

Anita,
How absolutely wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing this with me. I am touched, moved and inspired by the beauty of who you are and the gift you are to these children--and to the world. I look forward to seeing this project blossom--and Oprah can get you there if you want to take this to other hospitals domestically and globally. If we can get the children singing; then, maybe musical instruments instead of guns will be their future. You are creating a legacy that is taking wings and flying! Blessings,

Make everyday a great day!

Anita,
You are creating a journey for the many children who want to express the joys, the fears and the hope that they hide within their soul.
I applaud your vision and thank you for opening this door of hope to families.
Sharing your amazing talent through the hearts of children is a gift to us all. I consider it a tremendous priviledge to call you my friend. Your journey touches the lives of so many.
I wish you continued success.
